A little bit about me.
I grew up in a cold part of Canada, leading a fairly average middle-class life. I attended school, completed a few years of college, and earned a couple of diplomas. Although I never secured a long-term career, I was fortunate and reliable enough to always find work that covered my food and shelter needs, which made me comfortable.
In my younger days, I was quite athletic and participated in various sports and competitions across the country. Unfortunately, after finishing college, I lost my enthusiasm for sports. I worked a series of jobs and simply lived my life, sometimes on my own in different cities and, at other times, moving in with relatives.
Later in life, I found and married an amazing woman. Both of us held decent jobs, and we enjoyed various fun activities together. We loved each other and found joy in making each other happy. One of our shared interests was great food, and we also enjoyed playing computer games. Over time, however, we both became out of shape and overweight. Despite our attempts to get healthy and fit again—both individually and together—none have met with success.
I tried to eat healthily and spent considerable money on programs designed to track eating and motivate exercise, but I saw little change. I read books on healthy living and watched videos that claimed to reveal the secrets to losing weight. I encountered numerous "quick fixes" for fat loss and muscle gain overnight. I listened to doctors who seemed to offer solutions for restoring my health, but unfortunately, none of it worked for me.
Though many people provided great advice—some of it common sense and some quite technical—it never truly addressed my individual situation or how I could apply it. The guidance did not take into account the various factors in my life or their interactions. I realized that what I needed was someone who could offer personalized food and exercise plans tailored to me. I wanted to know the best supplements and procedures available to help me achieve better health.
I did find some services that provided individualized plans, but they generally came from health coaches who didn’t seem to have more knowledge than I did, and their fees were exorbitant. This led me to think that what was needed was a large organization dedicated to extensively studying health and then combining that knowledge to deliver it on a personal, individual basis.
This is how, seven years ago, I began to develop the idea for the Institute for Human Health. My goal was to learn how to be healthy for myself and my family while also sharing that knowledge with the wider world.
